Well, there is good news AND bad news to report today. First, the good news! Brad was able to leave the hospital today and go home! He's extremely happy about that and we are all very happy for him to be out of there.
The bad news is: the results of the latest biopsy are back in... his brand new liver has already gone into Stage 4 (on a scale of 0-4, with 0 being no fibrosis), meaning cirrhosis. His body is too weak to take on chemotherapy right now and the doctors have exhausted all resources for the time being. The doctors said that most people that have liver transplants due to HCV (Hepatitis C) WILL have a recurrence of the disease, but that it usually does not attack this severely NOR this quickly. Usually, the disease does return, but long enough after the transplant to where the patient can sustain chemotherapy (with a fairly high degree of success) to stop the disease in its tracks.
They have sent Brad home from the hospital hoping that while at home, he will not be exposed to as many pathogens, he will be able to be more active and that he will be able to put on more weight and get his strength back. I don't believe he's a candidate for ANOTHER transplant at this time either, due to the fact that his body is in such bad shape AND the fact that the HCV is completely out of control at this time.
On a personal note.... I'm so frustrated and upset with the way things have turned out because he has been through SO much. A transplant, alone, is a MAJOR ordeal and to find out that in less than 3 months of receiving his brand new liver, it is already where his old one was at Stage 4, it's more than I can handle. I can only imagine what things are going through his mind.... Brad, I'm so sorry that you're having to go through all of this. :-(
