Balloon Fiesta 2009!!!!
Last Thursday, Nicki was out of school for 'Fall Break' and we embarked on our journey to the Special Shapes Rodeo at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta!
I think this might be my favorite event in New Mexico so far. Of course, it starts MIGHTY early... but since we live closer to Intel now (the place where we do the 'park n ride' to the Fiesta), it wasn't TOO bad. We were up at 4 something in the morning, got dressed and headed to Intel by 5:15 AM. The weather was fantastic! It was brisk, but not too cold, like it has been in the past. When we got there... the first thing we did was find a souvenir pin for Nicki.
This year, she picked a 'Dawn Patrol' pin. We've been discussing how important their role is to the safety of all the other balloonists.
Then we searched for funnel cake... We didn't find any... we couldn't believe it... that's all she'd talked about for days... getting funnel cake. So, we stopped at a stand and grabbed a donut for each of us... then proceeded to walk around the various booths. Finally, we checked our map and saw a funnel cake stand! Apparently, we hadn't gone down far enough, so we headed to get one! It was sooooo good! We shared it and got powdered sugar all over us... oh well! lol Then, the balloons started to inflate and we watched as the 'zebra's' (the guys dressed in the black and white uniforms) told the various pilots when they were clear to launch.
It was so much fun! We had to wait in line for over 30 minutes for the bus to take us back to Intel when it was time to go home, but all-in-all... it was a wonderful day and I can't wait to do it all again next year! Enjoy the pics!!!
