Nicki's 1st Day of School!!!!!

Well, it was a success! Nicki's first day of school went pretty well. The school had the kindergarteners come in one hour later than the rest of the school and I think that was a FANTASTIC idea! It really helped with the commotion and traffic. So let's start at the beginning...

At 6:20 AM, the home phone rings and I didn't catch it in time before they hung up but the caller ID said it was 'RR Public Schools'. I thought, 'hmmmm.... I wonder if anything is wrong... nah... they are probably just wishing everyone a Happy First Day of School.' Then about 10 minutes later, my cell phone rings and I answer and it is a pre-recorded message from the Rio Rancho Public School system saying that school will be delayed for 2 hours due to problems with the buses!!!! Well, that was crazy! Apparently, some vandals broke into where the school buses are kept and slashed the tires of several buses. So, instead of her starting at 9:15 this morning (which is already an hour later than school NORMALLY starts), she didn't go in until 11:15!

So, she was up right before 8 AM and I tried to act real calm (yeah right... I was probably MORE excited than her, if that's possible) and keep her busy so that her nerves wouldn't get the best of her and that worked pretty well. Jason, Nicki and I all left home and went up to school right around 11 AM. We were greeted by some ladies holding the front doors for us and although some kids (and parents) were sobbing uncontrollably, Nicki walked right up to the doors and the lady said, 'You look like you're ready for school!'. To which Nicki replied, 'I am!!!! Today is my first day of kindergarten!!!!!'. It was funny.

We took her to school (because of the 1 hour kindergarten delay) and she got to ride home on the bus. It didn't have any windows open and when she got off, she was all red. We walked back home and she said she was 'exhausted'.

She said that they reviewed colors today in Spanish and English (which she'd forgotten most of her Spanish) and they read "The Gingerbread Man" and had craft time and a fire drill. They were there just a short amount of time, but she seemed thrilled.

After she was done telling me about her day (and eating a little snack), I asked her if she was a 'school pro' yet. She told me 'not yet'. I cheerfully said, 'Well, you'll get more practice tomorrow!' To which she replied... 'You mean I have to do this EVERY day?!!!!!' I can't wait to see what all tomorrow has in store! :-)
